On this weeks edition of “Something For The Weekend,” our guest writer is Sean Sheehy from Kingston-Upon-Thames DIY label Youth Camp Records.

Formed just over 18 months ago, Youth Camp Records has a handful of releases under its belt with the likes of Loose CannonsWell Wisher, Ten Speed Bicycle and Jackals having released material during the labels short existence. When Sheehy is not running Youth Camp, he’s playing in indie punk trio Losing Sleep.

If your label or band would like to become a guest writer for Something For The Weekend contact Sean Reid to find out more information.

I came across the bands I have picked for this in a few different ways, by being sent practice demo’s or when a friend has told me they are starting a new band or just going to a show because of a recommendation. Hopefully if you are not aware of any of these bands yet, it will give you the push to spare them a bit of your time, because it may be your thing!

Loose Cannons
For Fans Of: Saves The Day, American Football, Title Fight
Its probably really cheeky choosing a record that I put out myself, but it’s not too much about wanting to shift them its more that this record really is great. Sadly Marcus Rutherford, one of their singers and guitarist’s passed away early last year just before this record came out. Which means that the band never got to play these songs live and I think it missed a lot of people because of this, but this record really is great! It really shows them finding more of a sound and pushing it, from the demo, and doesn’t just show what potential they had as a band, but what great songwriters they were then. Feel free to download or stream the record from Youth Camp’s Bandcamp for free, just make sure to give it a listen!

Carson Wells
For Fans Of: Braid, Embrace, Sinaloa.
I saw Carson Wells last week, and hadn’t listened to them prior to that. I have friends that have been talking about them; from being friends to having put out thier album but like I said, I hadn’t listened. But I went to the show to see them, but wasn’t expecting to be quite as blown away as I was!

Hailing from Aberdeen, they were down on a tour with Your Neighbour The Liar. People that like their emo will love this. Fans of Braid, Embrace and Sinaloa should especially love this. But if you aren’t too aquainted with those bands and love more recent bands like Algernon Cadwallader or newer Title Fight, you may be into this. Basically they rule and you should at least give them a try if you like music at all.

Nona
FFO: Green Day, Superchunk, and Foo Fighters.
I thought I would pick a band from overseas too, so I went with Nona. If you don’t know Nona, they’re a pop punk band from West Chester, Pennsylvania. They have been going for over a year now, and have released an EP and a split, but have just solidified their line up with Dos from Spraynard and Mike Haller. They are recording their first album in January and should be coming over to Europe and the UK at some point next year!
