Earlier this month, Los Angeles melodic metalcore quintet Bad Omens made their UK debut. The run of four shows follows a busy few months having released their self-titled Stateside last summer, while they’ve also played alongside the likes of Asking Alexandria, Born Of Osiris, Veil Of Maya, and Upon A Burning Body.

Having grabbed the attention of the metalcore community through a couple of stellar singles, ‘Glass Houses’ and ‘Exit Wounds’, ‘Bad Omens’ sees the five-piece take the accessible metal of Bring Me The Horizon and combine it with punishing riffs (‘Malice’), haunting pianos (‘Crawl’) and soothing atmospherics (‘The Fountain’). It’s a noteworthy debut from a band who are gaining momentum.

As they finish off a run of European shows and prepare to jump on the Vans Warped Tour next month, we spoke to Bad Omens to find out what they’ve been listening to while they were visiting the UK for the first time. With current alt-pop artists, pop-punk up-and-comers, metal legends and more, it’s clear that Bad Omens have eclectic mix blasting through their speakers on the road.

Halsey – Alone

Noah (Sebastian – vocals): Her new album came out recently, I’ve been listening to it non-stop and Alone is probably my favourite track both lyrically and musically. It has a really unique soulful jazzy kind of sound to it which is new for her and she pulls it off very well.

Broadside – Laps Around A Picture Frame

Noah: Their new album also just came out and they’re one of my favourite bands honestly. I’ve been friends with their singer Oliver as well as his family since I was 12 years old and both our bands are from the same town. So aside from just how great the music is there’s a lot of hometown pride and history with those guys and I’m beyond proud of them.

Hans Zimmer – Is She with You?

Noah: We’ve mentioned a lot that we’re into and inspired by film score and original cinema compositions and this track is my current favorite after seeing the new Wonder Woman movie. The main hook honestly feels like it would make a really cool breakdown between the guitar lead, and less common 7/4 time signature if you added the right full band elements behind it obviously. Super inspiring stuff and got my creativity going the first time I heard it.

Airbourne – Runnin’ Wild

Joakim (Karlsson – guitar): I’ve always been a big fan of AC/DC and I’m really stoked on this younger, fresher take on the same riffy Australian rock n’ roll.

For BDK – Silence My Breath

Joakim: This just takes me to that place, it’s very minimalistic and deep with a chord progression+coloring that just hits the spot for me. To be honest I have no idea what she’s singing about. Doesn’t matter. It’s about the musical journey. Lyrics is usually an after thought for me strangely enough. Everything needs to be good, then I’ll focus on the words.

Hillsong United – Oceans

Joakim: I’ve just very recently discovered this group. I love The whole big musical landscape approach. It’s the way I go about writing music myself and this amongst other great similar bands is where I find some of my inspiration. Sad but happy / tears of joy vibes. I absolutely love it.

Ice Choir – Two Rings

Vincent (Riquier – bass): I am a massive fan of 80’s goth, new wave and dark wave. When I listen to Ice Choir, most especially Two Rings, I feel transported to another time and find myself lost in the production and sonic choices. The lyrics to this song are 10/10.

O’Brother – Complicated End Times

Vincent: I had heard of O’Brother over the years but had never really given them a listen until recently. When I first heard this song and it’s album counterpart, I found myself playing it on repeat for days on end. When I listen to this song I feel like I’ve found my spirit animal or my soul mate in sound. Every choice that this band makes is one that I would make, I find a big part of myself in this song. It’s like looking in the mirror.

Massive Attack – Paradise Circus

Vincent: This is one of my favourite tracks from the legendary Massive Attack. I first heard this song in the title card of the BBC show “Luther” and it’s been in heavy rotation ever since. The feel of this song and the lyrics are deeply dark and sexual and pertain to losing yourself in lust, I feel that I relate so closely to this song because I have lived through that moment and know how intense it can be. This song perfectly encapsulates that.

Joey Bada$$ – Land of The Free

Nick (Folio – drums): I love the meaning behind this songs.

Kendrick Lamar – DNA

Nick Folio: This song rocks! I’ve always been a fan of his music. The new album (‘DAMN.’) is amazing.

Black Sabbath – Heaven and Hell

Nick Folio: I’ve always been a fan of the classics. This track always makes me think of my dad when I hear it. He’s the one that got me into this band.

Balance and Composure – Run From Me

Nick (Ruffilo – guitar): Just a killer groove track with smooth shimmering guitars.

Natalie Imbruglia – Torn

Nick Ruffilo: This takes me right back to my childhood and it’s an incredible cover.

Taking Back Sunday – One-Eighty by Summer

Nick Ruffilo: There’s some really interesting raw vocal takes with cracks and imperfections that made it on the record and I’m so glad they did.
