Album Review: We Are The Physics – Your Friend, The Atom

Hailing from Glasgow, We Are The Physics are quite the distinctive band. The four-piece are back with their new release Your Friend, The Atom,’ treating their already loyal fan base to a very chaotic offering. The band name itself blatantly conveys the bands love for science as does the album title.Their very unique sound makes it difficult to classify them within a genre, so they took it in their stride to create a fictional offering of ‘mutant science punk rock.’ I’d say that this sums up We Are The Physics sound pretty perfectly.

OpenerGo Go Nucleo -> For Science’ kick starts the record with electronic sounding guitar effects and rapid drums with We Are The Physics starting as they mean to go on. Welcoming quirky, high pitched vocals the four-piece has created a very individual sound less than a minute into the record. This continues withApplied Robotics’ where I find myself completely addicted to the four-piece. Both fascinated and intrigued by their distinctive character there are still another twelve tracks to go and I can’t help but feel disappointed in myself for not having listened to them before.

With beyond unusual time signatures, Dildonics’ is the standout track for me. It’s captivating energy and stupidly infectious guitar lines mid song leave me speechless, and that’s without mentioning the crossover vocals that really top this track. All My Friends Are JPEGs’ is another fantastic offering on the record and one that calls for interaction, with a chant that includes the lyrics “I crop off your legs, I tag you, you tag me, all my friends are JPEGS." This fun and quirky attitude is one of the many admirable traits that We Are The Physics possess, another reason why I can’t help but love the band.

Ending track Olivia Neutron Bomb’ slows the record down somewhat, consider it a cool down after a crazy workout. The record is also slowed in pace midway through with the slightly controversially named There Is No Cure For The Common Cold So Don’t Expect A Cure For Cancer’.  Despite loving ‘Your Friend, The Atom’ for its chaotic energy it was nice to hear a slower track that still possessed the bands individual sound and technicalities.

‘Your Friend, The Atom’ is a truly unique record. It is so fast paced that after listening to it the entire way through I feel like I need to lie down. This is definitely not a criticism: the record kept me on my toes and certainly grabbed hold of my attention from the minute it began right until the very end. Their technicality astounds me and their musical ability is beyond this planet; ‘Your Friend, The Atom’ is a fantastic record and after listening to this masterpiece you will certainly crave more.

4.5/5
