Album Review: Slowyear – Slowyear EP

Usually, I know whether I like a band within hearing them for about 20 seconds. That probably sounds a bit short, and I do give bands second chances. However, there are times when I listen and instantly I’m hooked.

Hello Slowyear. Barely into the first track from their self-titled EP and I know it’s going to be good. This EP reflects the band so well. It oozes something fresh and exciting yet strangely familiar. The band describe themselves as an alternative post hardcore band, and I find that rather fitting.

Sure, there are heavier and lighter moments integrated and laced throughout the well crafted songs that create this particular sound, yet I can imagine them fitting so well on Run For Cover Records.

Lyrically, there are some real deep moments. Emotive lyrics such as “sometimes I don’t feel like one, but I try my best to be a better son’ could’ve been a better son” and the epic finale of ‘Dice’ with “just share this broken bed with me.”

Length wise, all we have on offer here is a 4 track EP. However, what we have an offer is a brilliant young British band who certainly have a knack for whatever this music is that they’re creating. Saying that though, it does’t need to be labelled. Just simply know that it’s good, because that’s what matters.

I would’ve given this a higher rating, but it’s simply because I’m fairly sure Slowyear can produce something even more fantastic than what this EP is. This is me giving them a target and I’m more than sure they’ll hit it. Early days, but what we have here is a fantastic debut EP and a fantastic band that delivered it.
